Nickel —

Bettering FX Trading for Small Businesses

NiX is Asia’s first decentralized FX exchange for corporates and onshore banks to access liquidity and price discovery for emerging market currencies at the institutional level.

During my time in Nickel, I worked on the UI for new features for an intuititive, streamlined trading and settlement process for users.

Experience

I first joined Nickel as a blockchain developer - my first job out of college. After a year of building a multi-node blockchain network, writing up smart contracts, and integrating it with our backend systems, I wanted to follow my instincts to pursue a design career.

I transitioned into a design role, and became the company’s in-house designer for the next 2 years, working closely with the founding team to: maintain and build upon existing screens, conceptualise new features, and influencing the product vision and strategy at Nickel.

Key Takeaways

My journey into UX began here.

When I first started out in design, I wanted to make beautiful screens for people to interact with.

Along the way, limited research practices and designing in silo made me realize that beyond the visual aspect, I wanted to build products that people need - regrettably, a little too late for Nickel, which ceased operations in May 2020.

Update in 2022: I’ve come a long way as a product designer - but I still have a lot to learn. This case study was intentionally left here, as a reminder of why I stepped foot into the industry.
